抄録: A 51-year-old man was found to have an abnormal polypoid lesion on UGIs of a health examination and was adrnitted to our hospital. Duodenogram showed a pedunculated polypoid lesion (12mm in diameter) in the third portion of the duodenum and endoscopic examination revealed that the surface was villous. The histological
diagnosis of a biopsy specimen was villous adenoma. Endoscopic polypectomy was performed without any accidental complications. Histology of resected specimen revealed tubulo-villous adenoma with no malignancy. Although opportunities to detect duodenal polypoid lesions are increasing recently, tubulo-villous adenoma of the third portion of the duodenum is rare.

抄録: A 53-year-old male was hospitalized on April 12th, 2002 because of an upper abdominal pain that started in the morning of April 11th and gradually worsened. Ileus
was suspected based on an X-ray of the abdomen. A medical interview revealed that the patient had eaten raw firefly squids, 2 days before the hospitalization. The abdominal symptoms disappeared in a few days during which the patient was treated
conservatively. A specimen from the patient's sera reacted with the esophageal glands in frozen sections of a type X larva of the suborder Spirurina. The infection of the type X larvae of unidentified splruroid nematodes from squids was considered to be the cause, because those larvae have recently been to reported as the cause of visceral and cutaneous. Although the infection rate in W. scintillans is relatively low, a risk of human infection with type X larvae should be taken into a consideration in the consumption of raw squids.

ヒト口腔扁平上皮癌におけるリン酸化型ERKおよびMKP-1の発現について

抄録: Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascades are activated in response to various extracellular stimuli. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), a MAPK subfamily, are activated by many oncogenes including ras and raf, which are closely associated with cell growth and differentiation. There is a report that ERK is highly expressed in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) but it does not include activated forms of ERK (phosphorylated ERK, pERK). Here we examined expression of pERK by immunohistochemical method in 50 OSCC and 7 normal gingival mucosa cases. The
positive ratios of immunoreactivity for pERK in nuclei of cells were higher in OSCC than in normal gingival mucosa. Index of pERK was correlated with Ki-67 index.
Interestingly, pERK was also expressed in Ki-67 negative cells in OSCC. Next, we investigated distribution and expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), which dephosphorylates and inactivates ERK, by the methods of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization (ISH). The distribution of positive signals for protein and mRNA expression of MKP-1 showed almost the same results as demonstrated in pERK. The expression of MKP-1 protein by Western blot analysis was seen in all cases, and the expression in several cases of OSCC was higher than that in normal ginglval mucosa.
The results raise a possibility that MKP-1 might be activated in response to ERK
activation in cancer cells and suggest that the interaction of two molecules play an
important role in proliferation and differentiation of OSCC. Moreover, the assay of MKP-1 expression as well as ERK should provide a good clue to assess the progression or prognosis of OSCC.

Dose-Related Decrease of Hemidesmosomes of the Rabbit Corneal Epithelium After Excimer Laser Photorefractive Keratectomy

タイトル: Dose-Related Decrease of Hemidesmosomes of the Rabbit Corneal Epithelium After Excimer Laser Photorefractive Keratectomy

抄録: Currently excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is widely performed to correct refractive errors. It has been recognized that it takes several months for attachment apparatus of the basement membrane of the comeal epithelium to reconstruct their original structure after laser ablation. We investigated dose-related
delay of the recovery of hemidesmosomes of the basement membrane of basal cells on the
comeal epithelium after PRK in rabbits. Three months after excimer laser ablation, the percentages of hemidesmosomes occupied by basement membrane were measured. The
results showed that the percentages significantly decreased as follows: PRK12D group < PRK3Dgroup < control group.
Although only two doses of laser ablation were tested, these results indicated that the more laser ablation the cornea received, the more delay of reconstruction of hemidesmosomes of the basal cells on the corneal epithelium occured.
